Penelope Trappes is a singer, producer and song-writer originally from Australia, who lives and works in London. Her songs “The Hair Shirt” and “Gold Universe” were featured in the broadcast UNEARTHED #2 from 13.09.2021.
She creates the kind of music that predominantly exists far beyond words. Most of her songs are defined by an almost complete lack of rhythm and conventional song structure, which creates a perception of time- and movelessness, while her voice blends into ethereal soundscapes of melancholy and solitude.
In her latest music video “Two Witches” for her song “Awkward Matriarch”, she meets her (real-life) daughter to pass on to her maternal knowledge that a woman needs in order to not fall into the traps of “reactionary behaviors” and to preserve, even unfold, the salvation of her soul. In hope to heal transgenerational trauma and to spare subsequent generations from legacy burdens. A gift that only a mother can give to her daughter (and further descendants).
The video, directed and edited by Agnes Haus, employs a minimalist aesthetic, which is reminiscent of the visual worlds of photographer Evelyn Bencicova. The colors of the witch costumes, which were designed and tailored by Penelope Trappes herself, speak a clear language in the context of the subject matter.
