TRACK OF THE DAY:
NIGHTSHADE by ROBOHANDS
jazz / psychedelic / experimental
ROBOHANDS is the experimental solo/collaborative project of London based composer and multi-instrumentalist Andy Baxter.
Since his debut album GREEN, released in 2018 on Village Live Records, he has been bringing jazz lovers to revel in his experimental and mellow blend of jazz, fusion, psychedelic, hip-hop and ambient. In 2019, Andy Baxter self-released the follow-up DUSK. The acclaimed album SHAPES was released on King Underground in 2021.
NIGHTSHADE
KAE’s today’s Track Of The Day comes from his album VIOLET, which he released in August last year.
For Violet, the musician has developed entirely new tones and textures. The prevailing jazz influences of its predecessors have given way a little bit to ambient and neo-psychedelic here. In places, however, the album can still be located in the spiritual jazz realm. Two tracks feature outstanding vocal performances by singer Aleh Ferreira on the otherwise instrumental album. The whole album is characterized by warmth and a cozy atmosphere.
With all these fantastic tracks on Violet, why did the choice actually fall on NIGHTSHADE? It was simply the first track I got to hear from this artist and it immediately sparked enthusiasm. The dialogue between the initially ominous bassline and the discreet electric guitar, the partial intermezzi of the trumpet and the percussions result in an alternating, but so harmonious interplay that one is tempted to switch to the after-work mode right away. And the following tracks don’t help either: Violet is definitely a record for the comfortable after hours.
On Bandcamp, VIOLET is still available on black or blue vinyl. In October 2022 Robohands’ latest album GIALLO was released, which can currently be pre-ordered.
